12/3 means the cord uses 12-gauge conductors with three conductors inside the jacket, including a ground. This is a common configuration for heavy-duty, grounded extension cords used with outdoor tools and equipment.
It’s a true 12-gauge cord (12 AWG). Many buyers choose 12 AWG when they want more dependable power delivery than lighter gauges for outdoor tools, longer runs, or multi-device setups.
All four outlets share the same total cord capacity. You can plug into multiple outlets at once as long as the combined load of all connected devices stays within the cord’s rated limit.
The outlets do not “split” power evenly on their own. The only limit is the total combined draw of everything plugged in. Keep the total within the cord rating to avoid overheating and performance issues.
SJTW is a common designation for outdoor-rated cord jackets. It signals a jacket design intended for outdoor exposure and daily handling, which helps the cord hold up better outside than indoor-only cord types.
Outdoor-rated cords are made for outdoor environments, but safe placement still matters. Keep plug connections out of standing water, avoid placing connections where water can pool, and use a covered connection method when conditions are wet.
For outdoor use, a GFCI-protected outlet adds an important layer of protection. Many exterior outlets are already GFCI-protected. If you’re not sure, using GFCI protection is a smart safety step for outdoor power.
A 12-gauge outdoor extension cord is commonly chosen for lawn and garden tools because it supports higher-demand use better than lighter cords. Always confirm the tool’s electrical requirements and keep total load within the cord rating.
It’s best to avoid connecting extension cords together. A single cord at the right length reduces voltage drop, heat, and extra connection points exposed to outdoor conditions.
Check the cord gauge (12 AWG), the outlet count (four outlets), the jacket type (SJTW for outdoor use), the safety listing (ETL), and your total device load. Matching those points to your setup is the quickest way to choose confidently.
